Politics in Peru

According to the constitution of 29 December 1993 Peru is a presidential republic and the legislative power is terrain of the congress. The congress is a chamber of delegates with 120 members who are chosen for 5 years via direct voting. The executive power is with the president who is also chosen for a period of 5 years. The president may rule for two periods but since 2000 it also possible to rule a third period.

When a candidate gets 56% of the votes he is chosen, but when there is no candidate with this percentage, a second round is needed. There is a vote duty for al citizens of 18 years and older. The president appoints the minister-president and is head of the army.

Education

Since 1972 all children between 7 and 16 years old are obliged to go to school, but sadly the level of the education is one of the lowest in whole Latin-America. At primary school up to 40% don't finish it and not a lot of children go to secondary school. There are 50 universities in Peru, of which one third are in Lima. About half a million people do a university education. The quality is higher on the private universities, which are just payable for a lucky few. About 12% of the Peruvians is illiterate and in the farmlands 45% of the women can't read.
